Read About The 1% For The People Program

Trek4Good is a volunteer program of The Mountain Fund. This program was started in order to address the need of volunteers to both see the country and contribute their time. By hosting volunteer visits that are close to the people and the cultures of the country, we help to prepare them to be more effective volunteers with a deeper understanding of the issues. Every Trek4Good trip either has a volunteer component built in, or is organized to raise funds for a particular project we support. It is another way that we can support our community-based partners around the world and educate more people through direct, personal experience.

All of our trips are designed to immerse you in the local culture and flavor of Peru and Nepal. We know the locals and work with them every day. Your guide and staff grew up in these countries and are experts in the languages, customs and history of the places you will visit on your trip.

We are fully committed to your trip being comfortable, as well as memorable. On our tented trips, we use the highest-quality Mountain Hardwear four-season tents. Our dining tents are either Mountain Hardwear Space Stations or Mountain Hardwear Strongholds. There are simply no finer tents that money can buy.

We are also committed to environmentally responsible trips. At our tented travel destinations, we use Phillips Environmental PETT toilet tents.

Our cooks are simply the best! You’ll enjoy fresh, tasty food prepared each day for your enjoyment.

We are committed to our porters and arrerios providing them with good wages, clothing, and food. They are our friends. They will soon be your friends too.

Testimonials

“My husband and I participated in the Moving Medical Clinic in Nepal, fall 2007. I am an OB/GYN physician, and my husband is a veterinarian. We absolutely loved being part of this trip. We were able to help so many people, who otherwise have no access to medical care. The trip was well-organized and the support staff was absolutely wonderful. We had as much fun working in the clinics, as interacting with the other members of the group, both Nepalese and westerners. This is a fabulous way to give back to a wonderful group of people, see some beautiful countryside, and get to know an aspect of a foreign country from an in-depth perspective.”
- Dr. Dorothy Kammerer-Doak, MD and Dr. Robert Doak, DVM
“I was lucky to participate as a junior doctor with The Mountain Fund Medical Trek within the very rural Rasuwa District of Nepal. Treating over 300 people per day with varying ailments from chronic to emergency medicine , we soon had to devise a method of appropriate triage. This became my role, and as such, a colleague and I had the pleasure and honour of listening to the concerns of all-comers, young and old, well and ill. The diversity of clinical conditions tested our medical capabilities and frequently our imagination, but the reward was in the smiles and gestures of comaderie between patients and other medical volunteers. To top it all off the scenery was breathtaking and always a welcome diversion from what is an exhausting but so worthwhile a role to play in such a vulnerable area.”
- Dr. Beth Hall-Thompson MBcHB, BSc
“This past October I had the pleasure of going on a medical trek in Nepal. I am an avid hiker and had been to Nepal twice before. I fell in love not only with the mountains during that time, but also with the people and culture. When I learned about The Mountain Fund and the possibility of combining my medical skills (I am a Physician assistant, practicing family medicine) with my passion for the outdoors and Nepal, I jumped on the opportunity. It turned out to be a perfect combination of enjoying myself on a trek, while giving something back to the local people. Trekking was much more meaningful when I got to know the people, and working with the local Nepalis (medical personelle, translators, porters and kitchen staff alike) was a real treat. Since returning home I am frequently asked if I would do it again. I answer enthusiastically that I am already planning to go on their next trip to Peru, and that I am very eager to return to Nepal as well.”
